About Us

Where we started

Smoky Hound was born on a sheep farm in the Northern Cape, somewhere between hard work, open skies, and the kind of self-sufficiency that comes from living sequestered from civilization.

Growing up on the land, you learn quickly that if you want something done, you do it yourself, and if you want something good, you make it with your hands. Preservation is a way of life. Working with quality meat from an early age gave a deep, practical understanding of flavour; how to protect it, how to develop it, and how to coax it into something truly worth eating.

That curiosity turned into an obsession. A fascination with systems, mechanics and food processing led to late nights tinkering, experimenting, and eventually building a working hot smoker fashioned from a mining gas chamber. That’s where our story begins.

Why Smoky Hound Exists

After leaving the farm and settling in the Western Cape, one thing became increasingly clear: quality smoked goods are hard to find, and when you do find them, they’re either priced out of reach, or they’re not actually smoked at all. Most commercially available smoked products get their flavour from spice blends and artificial flavorings; not from real, patient wood-fired smoke. That’s a shortcut we refuse to take.

Smoky Hound exists to bridge the gap between quality and affordability. To bring genuinely smoked goods to people and businesses in the Western Cape who deserve the real thing without paying a premium that prices out everyday people.

How We Work

Smoky Hound exists to bridge the gap between quality and affordability. To bring genuinely smoked goods to people and businesses in the Western Cape who deserve the real thing without paying a premium that prices out everyday people. Although we’re still small, every product that leaves our hands has been smoked with meticulous craftmanship, and intentional flavour in mind. We provide heavy smoke, for decadent folk.

Each product is an exercise in restraint and intention, letting the smoke speak for itself.
